Today I had the pleasure to supping soup with a new friend, Laurie Culley (you can find his poetry at https://www.lauriepoet.co.uk/ ). As we talked and shone a little light on our lives and passions, we reflected on coming across those people who would rather not have such an open and honest conversation. I was reminded of those occasions when I could see from the look in someone’s eyes that I’d over-shared and they weren’t up for the conversation taking that turn. Poets generally tend to have cultivated a greater willingness to reflect on their inner lives and have the words to express deeper thoughts.
But it still takes the journey of a conversation. Laurie, thank you for letting me share part of the journey with you.
Questions
The truth of a person cannot be fully known
without attention, without conversation.
The truth of someone cannot be quickly known
for their self-revelation will be rightly rationed.
The truth won’t just happen, will not be easily known
or take the direction that you might imagine.
The truth will depend on the wisdom in the question
and the greater wisdom in the reflection.
Friends, here’s to the journeys we take together, and the conversations that propel us along.
